"How Mad Men Has Influenced My Style"

Posted on 18 May 2012

When 12-year-old Kiernan Shipka stepped into the role of Sally Draper in AMC's stylish 1960s-set drama "Mad Men," now in its fifth season, she got more than a long-running job. As the actress tells omg!, she also discovered fashions from the era of the show. "'Mad Men' has definitely influenced my style," Kiernan said at Lucky magazine's Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference in Santa Monica, California. "I love prints, and I love florals, but I was kind of introduced to the silhouette of a dress I wear pretty much all the time [on the show]. It cinches in [at] the waist and then it goes out a little bit. That's probably my favorite silhouette, and I have to say that I did pick that up from the dresses that I wore on 'Mad Men' in the beginning seasons." She added, "And definitely 'Mad Men's' inspired me to go vintage shopping and just really to look at lots of cool pictures of the '60s online to see how style was back then and how it compares to now."

The Mad Men Report: 5x09 "Dark Shadows"

Posted on 18 May 2012

WARNING: Spoilers for those of you who don't live in the U.S.

Sally is given a project for school, to make a family tree. Sally is back and forth between her mother and father's houses. Betty really tries to stir things up in this episode. It begins with Megan teaching Sally how to cry on cue, which Megan does at her acting classes. Then the kids are shipped off to the "haunted mansion", Betty and Henry's house. While the kids are doing their homework, Betty finds a sweet note Don left Megan on the back of Bobby's drawing. With all Betty's stress about her weight and her jelousy at Don and Megan's happiness, she get's upset and takes a childish turn. She tells Sally she should add another branch for Don's first wife. Sally says she has already put her mother on there. And Betty reveals to Sally that she wasn't his first wife. She says that Anna Draper was. Sally is hurt by this information, Megan helped her with the tree and she thought they were friends. Why would she hide such a thing from her? Sally asks betty about Anna and Betty tells Sally that maybe she should ask Megan. When we see Sally back at the Draper residence she has quite the attitude toward Megan. Megan brings her up on it and Sally asks Megan why she kept the secret of Anna Draper from her. She says she thought they were friends. Megan does a great job at deflating the situation, explaining that things were different back then and they got married to "Help eachother out". She was open and honest. Sally later hears Megan and Don fighting about it and realizes what her mother had done. She wanted to "poisin them from 50 miles away". So the next time Sally is at her mother's house, her mom says that Sally's teacher said she did very well on her project and asked what Megan had to say about Anna, and Sally, with a combination of Betty's manipulation skills and Megan's acting skills, tells her mother that Don and Megan showed Sally some photos of Anna and "spoke very fondly of her". Sour loss for Betty. When Sally leaves the room she sends a box (of cereal?) flying in anger. The joys of bitter divorced parents.
